As the deadline loomed for this October edition of the Voice, the weather was strangely reminiscent of the February Show this year.
We head into 2024 for the 137th Show led by the newly elected President Stephen Wilson, coincidentally a neighbour just up the road to the outgoing Harold Sharman. Having been an active member of the committee for five years, Stephen takes on the leadership role with great passion for the Show and the values of the KVAHA. “It is a pleasure to take-up the position of Show President for the 2023/24 season and in being a continuing part of its long and rich history in bringing our community together in a showcase celebration. Under my watch and that of your committee, the Show will never lose this tradition or its heritage, but to use it as a key for the future, enhancing and embellishing this strength while broadening its appeal to all and perhaps many more – from the younger members of our community to those with experience and leadership to share.”
Also new to the executive team is Kathy Harrington as Vice President. As the Cheese and Dairy Steward and principal of Valley Cheesemakers, Kathy has been involved with the Show and many other KV community events for many years. “Our Show links tradition and community while providing information and entertainment that has a rural flavour. There’s something at the Show for everyone and the more we all join in the the greater the rewards for our community. So groom your chooks, bake the bread, make your cheese, fatten up the calves and enter the show competitions. I love this show and you will too.”
Taking on the role of Secretary is Janine Sosa, a familiar face in the middle of town at Di Jones realty. Janet Bundey stays in her valued role of Treasurer while Lorraine Mairinger maintains her stewardship of horses along with that of Vice President.
As a Show veteran of many years, Lorraine says this is a true community event and encourages everyone to be a part of it. “Agricultural shows are the beating heart of rural communities, and our Show might be small but it punches well above its weight. But it can’t happen without an army of volunteers across all of the sections, including the office, the gate, café, grounds, entertainment – you name it, we need people to help in the lead up and on the Show weekend.”
The volunteer army is about 100 people across the Friday and Saturday of the Show and the biggest job is still up for grabs. The KV Show is seeking a volunteer to be the Volunteer Co-ordinator who volunteers to co-ordinate the volunteers. Head to the website to find out more https://kangaroovalleyshow.org.au/volunteers.
Plans are well underway for a bumper weekend with the favourites you can’t do without and some new attractions you won’t want to miss. The traditional Friday kids day will lead into the Official Opening, followed by an evening entertainment bonanza for the whole family, starting with the Stockman’s Show and heading into a hoedown.
As usual, horse, poultry and cattle events will take centre stage all weekend, even as we say a sad and grateful farewell to Dave Kent who has been a highly valued member of the committee for many decades, President and Cattle Steward. His contribution, like those before him, will be a part of the rich 136-year history of farming in the Valley and competition through the Show.
While we work toward the finishing touches of the 2024 program, one thing’s for certain. You can pack your cossies and towel and plan for a whole day at the Show as pool access and a whole lot of fun is included in this year’s entry ticket.
Mark it in your diaries – Friday & Saturday 16-17 February 2024.
