Did you know that Upper River has a community owned hall?
And KV locals are able to hire it.
The Upper River community hall dates from 1963 and was built on land donated by Pam and Harold Sharman. It is one of the few community owned halls in the country, and in its time has seen dances, plays, concerts, weddings, dinners, meetings, mid-winter festivals, wakes and all manner of get-togethers.
It is managed by the Upper Kangaroo River Progress Association, which takes care of it and hires it out to locals and those who have a close connection with the valley. The decision was made to restrict the hirers to locals, as it is very special to Upper River people, and it was renting so often that we were unable to make use of it, especially on weekends in the ‘wedding season’.
The hall itself is large and comes with risers that can seat about 100 people. There is seating for about 150. There is a drop-down screen, but at this point there is no audio equipment available for use. The kitchen is rudimentary, there are male and female toilets and ramps into the building. Most big events hire everything they need.
The attached annex drips with shabby chic – perfect for rustic decorating and practically indestructible. A search of the internet will find weddings that have transformed it into fairyland with little more than lights and lots of greenery.
