Firstly, a brief report on the progress of our team at the 2021 Men’s Senior Fours Open State Championships in Ettalong. ‘Orange City’ forfeited the first match which meant that, whilst the forfeit gave Berry a technical win, there was no for and against score. The second match against ‘Grandviews’ was a game of two halves. The Berry team of Terry Hayes, David Badger, Deb Folkard and Russell Tulloch started very well and held the lead for most of the match. Unfortunately, a bit of bad luck resulted in Berry losing the match by 22 points to 19. In the third game Berry came up against a very determined team from ‘Austral’, who played the maximum length whenever they had the lead. Half-way through the match Russell Tulloch retired due to an injury and I was substituted in to play lead. My first bowl was a ‘resting toucher’ which, at the time, gave me confidence for a good game. Unhappily, this achievement was not repeated and we all struggled with the length and slow green. We all had our moments of brilliance but this could not save us from being defeated 27 points to 11. Whilst the overall results were disappointing, the experience was invaluable and we had a lot of fun.
Notwithstanding the onset of winter, the ongoing improvement in the weather has resulted in increased bowling activity in Social Bowls as well as the soon to be recommenced Championship events. The Men’s Singles, Challenge Singles, Pairs and Challenge Pairs are due to commence in the next two weeks.
The following are the results of social bowls matches in the past month:
11 May – Keith Pepper and Rob Folkard won a ‘nail-biter’ by one point against Col Agar and Bob Dunn. Despite being tied on two occasions, Deb Folkard and Terry Hayes finished strongly to defeat Russell Tulloch and David Badger.
18 May – J. Moncaster, Steve Kellett and Col Good played consistently to take victory over Peter Haddon, Derek Raymond and Bob Dunn. Darryl Goodger and ‘Jingles’ Chittick clearly outscored Keith Pepper and Lindsay McNamara. Bill Chittick and Mark Power scored 6 on the last end to take the win over Ron Nelson and ‘Tige’ Lidbetter.
21 May – ‘Skippy’ Chittick and Steve Kellett played well to defeat Derek Raymond and Jingles Chittick. After scoring 7 points on the second end, Rob Folkard and David Badger went on to narrowly defeat Deb Folkard and Terry Hayes. Bob Dunn and Tige Lidbetter had a convincing win over Peter Haddon and Lindsay McNamara.
25 May – After leading early in the match Peter Haddon, Laurie Watson and Bob Dunn eventually went down to Keith Pepper, Darryl Goodger and Col Good. Mark Power, Jingles Chittick and Tige Lidbetter had a one-point victory over Rob Folkard, Deb Folkard and David Badger. Bill Chittick and Col Agar defeated Ron Nelson and Lindsay McNamara.
4 June – In a see-sawing match, Skippy Chittick and Bob Dunn defeated Derek Raymond and Jingles Chittick by one point.
8 June – In a game in which the lead changed hands many times, Keith Pepper and Bob Dunn were the eventual winners over Ron Nelson and Bill Chittick. Peter Haddon and Col Good were victorious over George Waddell and Col Agar. Derek Raymond and Jingles Chittick played Darryl Goodger and Tige Lidbetter in a match which resulted in the scoreboard being tied on both points and ends won.
Ladies’ bowls
There is little to report on this month due to the cancellation of the Major/Minor competition but hopefully, if Covid behaves, that is all about to change. We have just completed our new Financial Year calendar and it is going to be a busy year! We start with the Minor Singles Competition, our Town of Trees tournament and the District Pairs Championship which are all scheduled for July.
The Town of Trees tournament was filled very quickly this year. I think everyone is looking forward to getting back to normal, enjoying the opportunity of meeting new and old friends, friendly rivalry and lots of laughs. The prize money doesn’t hurt either. They will be competing for 1st prize $450, 2nd $300, 3rd $150 per team and $90 for the morning and afternoon winners who missed out on the major prize money. There will be 28 teams of three players each from Windang, St George’s Basin, Nowra, Warilla, Sussex Inlet, Culburra, Oak Flats, Berry, Bomaderry and Huskisson many of them sending multiple teams. It should be another great day.
