Repair work on Moss Vale Road near Kangaroo Valley

Transport for NSW is continuing work to ensure safe access for road users into and out of Kangaroo Valley Moss Vale Road was significantly damaged as a result of major flooding and rainfall in late February and is closed to all traffic at Barrengarry Mountain just north of Kangaroo Valley.

Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain, south of Kangaroo Valley, was also significantly damaged. Escorted access is being provided for all Transport customers across Cambewarra Mountain 24 hours a day.

It will take up to 6 months to restore access at Barrengarry Mountain. This may change as further assessments are carried out.

The slope issues are complex and require specialist workers to assess the damage and put together a work plan. More than a dozen state roads across the south coast have been impacted by the extreme weather event and further damage is expected over the coming weeks. The continuing bad weather is making it difficult to finalise investigations into the extent of the damage.

We are investigating options to carry out maintenance work on Hampden Bridge while the road is closed to avoid further closures once roads re-open. We are committed to looking at options to reduce impacts on customers and the community where possible.

It is expected to take up to two years to restore the full-length of Moss Vale Road to pre-flood condition.

Traffic Impacts

Moss Vale Road at Barrengarry Mountain just north of Kangaroo Valley is closed to all traffic in both directions. Limited access is being provided to emergency services and school students to meet their school bus.

Detours are in place via Hume Motorway, Picton Road and the Princes Highway. Light vehicles can also detour via Jamberoo Mountain Road, adding up to an additional 30 minutes to travel times.

Vehicles over 10 meters, 12 tonnes, buses and vehicles towing caravans of any size need to detour via Hume Motorway, Picton Road and M1 Princes Motorway, adding up to an additional 60-90 minutes to travel times.

Road users are advised to allow additional travelling time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

The Illawarra Highway at Macquarie Pass is also currently closed to all road users due to significant damage resulting from the recent rainfall.

Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain south of Kangaroo Valley is open with a 24/7 escort in place for Transport users to enter Kangaroo Valley. Escort is available on the hour to enter and on the half hour to exit.

We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses.
