Captain’s message

With the recent very hot days, we have seen an increase in fires elsewhere around the state. There have been numerous calls seeking assistance from members where available. Also, things have dried up locally, so maintain your awareness and keep up your fire prevention and mitigation around your property.

Fire permits were only in force until the end of March. After this period, you are still required to notify the RFS either online at RFS Notify, or call Shoalhaven RFS, plus notifying your immediate neighbours.

Two of our specialised Remote Area Operators, Jamie and Dusty, travelled to Quirindi near Tamworth for a five-day operation mopping up after a bushfire, utilising helicopters to access remote terrain and water bombing of hot spots. This is largely physical work, using chainsaws and hand tools to cool smouldering hot spots.

The brigade has also taken the opportunity to assist several landholders with large pile burns that they weren’t comfortable with burning themselves. These agricultural burns also provided a good opportunity for member training purposes.

Thanks to community donations we have been able to purchase additional equipment for the brigade, including head torches and ute drawers for our community-funded 4WD vehicle. This vehicle sees extensive use for training courses and attending out of area fires. With over 15,000km travelled to date, this has saved wear and tear on members’ vehicles and our much larger fire trucks. Remember, all donations are tax deductible. It is timely now to donate to the brigade before the end of the tax year.

Have you ever considered joining the RFS? Now is the time.

Get together with your mates, friends, teenagers (16+), parents and learn skills for life.

We have already started a training course for new members, and plan on having three assessment dates during the year in April, July and October for BF (Bush Fire) training courses. Complete the application online at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/join-the-nsw-rfs. I am always happy to have a chat to newly interested members, so call by the station on a Wednesday evening around 6pm or call me on 0412 865 638

As far as the fire calls.
