Wattamolla hosts the Annual picnic and launches an historic book
1 Feb 11
This is always a happy and well attended event and this year the added attraction of the Launch of ‘VIEWS AND VISIONS’ tripled the number of attendees.
It was a gala day.
Twelve months ago, Andrew Fitzsimons asked me to be a guest at the picnic and proposed that I assist in writing a book on the early and latter day settlers of Wattamolla, Woodhill and Bellawongarah.
Sounds an easy assignment, only catch was that he thought we could have it ready for the 2011picnic!
Together with an undaunted Committee of enthusiasts, the research was done, the stories collected and photographs dug out of drawers and albums.
Thanks to the dedication and this small group and the passion of the community to record their history and showcase the beauty of the area, the book was completed in ten months.
Special thanks to Ray Price for his competent compilation of the stories and photographs, to Laurelle Price for her historical research and the generous assistance of the Committee and other supporters: Andrew Fitzsimons, John Davis, Rob Griffiths, Janet Walker, Alan and June Kellett, Julia Johnston, John Martin, Peter and Bernie Condon, Louise Matheson, Stuart Priddle, Janice Bruen, Mavis Parker, Roslyn Pollard, Greg Thompson, Wes Mc Pherson from the Lands Department, the Kangaroo Valley Historical Society, the Valley VOICE and the South Coast Register.
My job as Editor and Co-ordintator was made less daunting with the able help of all these people and the willingness of the community to embrace the project.
So it was achieved and proudly launched by John Walker and Pat Barrett, both descendants of early settlers.
Their knowledge and tireless assistance with suggestions and proof reading has ensured the success of this colourful publication.
