The Star Picket Dance

The Star Picket Dance by Bruce Latham
T’was the month of May, with thesunshine still warm
WhenI noticed a Jacaranda, bent by a storm
Ithought, “To straighten it back …I know the ticket”
“I’lltie it back …to a spare star picket”
No sooner had I driven it deep inthe ground
Than to mylament, I looked up and then found
That for allmy effort … all that it I’d got
Is that I’dhammered it deep, in the bloody wrong spot.
I spat. I swore. I wiped the sweat from myface
“How’d I dothat?”…”What a bloody disgrace!”
To right thewrong, there was only one chance
I had tocoax that thing out …with the star picket dance.
Well I made my approach, all tentative and slow
Took her by my hand…we had a longway to go.
At first itwas gentle, we swayed side to side.
Small littlemovements…step and then slide
But stillrigid and straight, no hint did she yield
That she wasever gonna move, from that spot in the field.
So I changed my style, and startedmoving her around
She seemedto enjoy it…I felt her give ground
Side toside, back and forth, round and round with care
She was myGinger Rogers…and I…Fred Astair
But for allof the rhythm and grace we portrayed
Still ... inthat hole … she stayed.
It was getting kind of hot, I wasstarting to perspire
But if shewas gonna move…I’d have to light her fire!
So I rippedoff me shirt, and got down to me pants of elastic
It was timeto start tripping the light fantastic.
So I raged and I moshed with vigourand glee
I threw heraround…even bent her over my knee
Fandango,Lambada, Sirroc and Flamenco
I wasdancing a storm…and finally feeling her let go
I knew it was time… when she wentloose in my arms
I’deventually won her over with my stamina and charms
So I steppedup real close, and with legs wrapped around
Gave athrust from me hips…and she lifted clear off the ground!
We both collapsed to the grass, itwas clear I was spent
But if Ithought I had it tough … that poor girlwas bent
We gazed upat the sky, for it was clear we were done
I took biggulping breaths and enjoyed that warmth from the sun
And in that quiet moment, I knew thegallant thing to do
I turned andspoke softly, “Was that good for you?”
