The latest update on Hampden Bridge restoration program

1 Apr 11

The timing of the restoration work for Hampden Bridge this year has been finalised following consultation with the local community.

 n9

Preliminary work

Preliminary work at Hampden Bridge is underway now and will continue at the bridge until Friday 6 May 2011.

This represents a more extensive period of preliminary work than was originally anticipated.

This is due to the need to removeand treat recently identified corrosion on the bridge's steel cable hangar rods, work that needs to be completed before the new deck is laid as part of the major work.

Throughout this preliminary work Hampden Bridge will remain open, with ‘stop/slow’ traffic control in place between 9am and 3pm each Monday to Friday.

There will be a limited number of daily delays of up to 15 minutes.

During the preliminary work there will be a one hour restriction on heavy vehicles over five tonnes using Hampden Bridge between 12 noon and 1 pm each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Bendeela Road Depot

Preliminary work at the RTA’s depot in Bendeela Road will begin from next Monday 14 March 2011.

There will be increased noise and activity at the depot, including heavy timber work and machinery in operation from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 5 pm, and on some Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm.

Major work

The major aspects of the restoration work will begin on 9 May 2011 and will involve a series of planned, mid-week, evening closures of Hampden Bridge from 6 pm to midnight each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between:

Monday 9 May and Friday 24 June (a seven week period) and Monday 25 July and Friday 9 September 2011 (a seven week period)

During these mid-week evening closures there will be no vehicular access across Hampden Bridge, however pedestrian access over the bridge will be maintained.

During these two seven-week periods there will also be work on Hampden Bridge during the day, from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 6 pm. During these hours the bridge will remain open with access across the bridge available at all times, with no weight restrictions, however there will be 'stop/slow' traffic control and short delays at times.

This timing provides one week of contingency at the end of the first  seven-week period and three weeks of contingency at the end of the second, both out of school holiday periods, should there be wet weather or unexpected delays.

Temporary Transport Services

To help minimise disruption and maintain connectivity in the local community during the planned mid-week evening closures the RTA is planning to provide a temporary shuttle bus service on either side of Hampden Bridge.

Thank you to those people who have completed and returned the RTA survey about this matter. Your responses will help us put in place an appropriate service.

Details will be finalised and provided to the community by the end of March 2011.

Should you require further information about any of these matters please contact me using the details below.
