Special ticket give-away for Song Company Christmas concert

1 Nov 11

The Song Company will transport audiences into a world of dreams, fairytales and imagination when they join forces with acclaimed shadow puppeteer Stephen Mushin for the spellbinding conclusion to their 2011 season.

Best known for his collaboration with singer Lior, Mushin will use simple silhouette cut-outs, screens and the performers’ own bodies to create a visually spectacular theatre performance with Australia’s leading vocal ensemble for Sweet Dreams in Wollongong on December 5.

Artistic Director Roland Peelman said he had first noticed Melbourne-based Mushin’s work – particularly the music video for Lior’s I’ll Forget You – several years ago and was struck by its beautiful simplicity. “Stephen has the ability to create so much using so little.

He can conjure up an entirely new and magical world with just a piece of paper and some scissors,” said Peelman.

A sensory experience for the whole family, Sweet Dreams will pair shadow puppetry with an enchanting mix of songs from around the world, from Maori to Mandarin and from English to Russian. Renowned Australian-based composer Elena Kats-Chernin has composed a new work, appropriately titled Where do the Cats Sleep?, for the concert’s story of dreams and imagination. The work marks her sixth for the Song Company and another of her pieces, Gone with the Waltz featuring six knife-sharpening singers, will also feature in Sweet Dreams.

Integrating images and music in a way few would dare, the Song Company will interact with Mushin’s shadow forms, manipulate the shadows and become the shadows themselves. “There’s a wonderful playfulness to this concert that is destined to delight children and the child within us all,” said Peelman. “In a sense it’s the perfect musical tonic to end the year, with a selection of songs and stories relating to our childhood and the fantasies that open up once we close our eyes.”

As a special thanks to their friends in Kangaroo Valley the Song Company will give a pair of tickets to the two people who are the first to answer the question:

When was the last time the Song Company sang in Kangaroo Valley?
