Pathways construction brought to an abrupt halt
29 Sep 09
A few weeks ago the construction of the pathway towards the Glenmack Caravan Park, thanks to Telstra telephone pits, was brought to an abrupt halt.
We recognised that the section between the Caravan Park and the culvert near Jarrett Lane had a number of Telstra pits that would need raising, as they are in a direct line of the path.
In an effort to prevent a hold up in the progress of the pathway we contacted Telstra to inspect the pits and arrange for them to be raised.
After their representative reviewed the pits and agreeing that they must be raised, at our cost, he insisted that he also look at how we had managed the situation despite us assuring him that the pathway had missed the pits.
This we had done but he decided we had gone too close and for OH&S requirements some of them also needed to be modified.
We were told that we would receive a quote from one of their accredited contractors.
This occurred a few weeks later, $6,500 in round figures.
This was forwarded to SC Council who authorised the contractor to complete the work.
This work should be completed by the time you read this and it will use up the remainder of the Federal Government grant.
Fortunately SC Council will be giving us another $7k, which is a third of the funding the Council sets aside for community project each year.
This will allow us to finish the path to Glenmack and hopefully, with community donations already received, reasonably close to the culvert.
We would like to be able to build a bridge across the culvert, as pedestrians and cyclists have to go dangerously close to road in this area, so any donations towards the project would be greatly appreciated.
