What a scorcher in the Southern Highlands

With the high temperatures, bush fires have been a big threat with Moss Vale experiencing 34-degree heat yesterday. The Wingecarribee has an extreme fire danger level with a total fire ban lasting till midnight Sunday.

Communications Officer at Fitzroy Falls Pat Hall said a fire started in Kangaroo Valley on Friday by a series of lightning strikes and it has spread to the escarpment on Wallaby Hill Road.

With three deployed helicopters grounded due to high winds and a southerly expected, Mr Hall said they were not sure what to expect until it comes.

The Wingecarribee and the Shoalhaven Rural Fire Service plus the National Park staff are all making preparations to keep the fire under control.

Shoalhaven blazes under control, say RFS

An 11 hectare bushfire burning in the Bundanoon Creek area, north of the Tallowa dam, is currently being patrolled.

National Parks says a fire about the same size in remote scrub north of Kangaroo Valley near Parish Road is being controlled.

RFS spokesman Anthony Clark says despite high temperatures over the weekend, there were no other fires that have broken out.

"We need to thank people for their vigilance over the past couple of days because we haven't seen a lot of those ignitions that we sometimes do see during this really hot weather," he said.

"So it seems that people have been heeding these messages and they have been taking care as we have suggested."
