Major bus crash on Barrengarry mountain

One person is dead and 27 others were injured when a bus left the road near the bottom of the Barrengarry hill descent.

Brake failure has been claimed for an accident around 7.30pm on Friday night.  The bus left the road on the second to last hairpin and plumented about 30m into the bush.

The driver died at the scene after being thown through the front window on impact.  Several others were seriously injured and had be evacuated by helicopter and ambulance to serveral of the nearby hospitals.

Passengers reported a strong smell of burning and the driver saying he could stop and to brace themselves.

Eight people were trapped until freed by emergency services.

The trip from Sydney to Kangaroo VAlley was an annual getaway arranged by the Polish community for carers and their families.
