Highlights of the 2011 K.V. Show

The skill and dedication of the axemen and women, not to mention their courage as they swing their razor sharp axes so close to their bodies, is clearly evident no matter who is competing.
However there were three junior competitors at this year’s wood chop event who deserve special mention.
With chain saws and log splitters readily at our disposal the art of wood chopping is at risk of dying out amongst the youth of today.
Often it is only because a parent, uncle, aunt or grandparent pariticipates in the sport that youngsters are drawn to take up this challenging and potentially dangerous craft.
This is the case for 12 year old Lucy Backhouse, 13 year old Tom Backhouse from Moss Vale and 11 year old Noah Windley from North Nowra whose fathers are experienced axemen.
This year at our show Lucy, Tom and Noah participated in the Junior Underhand Handicapped event which was sponsored by the NSW Axemans’ Association as part of their Junior Development Program.
After careful preparation of their beautifully oiled and keenly sharpened axes these three fit and talented young people braved the intense heat and humidity to pit their strength against their logs and each other!
Even handling their tools prior to competing required their full concentration as these axes are capable of doing serious damage to limbs should they accidentally slip.
To help protect their legs and feet they wear chainmail socks – no doubt some comfort to their dedicated parents who support their children to practice their sport around three times a week and accompany them to shows and exhibitions where they can compete with other juniors.
At the end of a tough contest in draining conditions the winner of this event was Tom Backhouse with Lucy Backhouse in second position and Noah a valiant third place getter.
Congratulations to all three competitors.
We wish you every success in the future as you carry on this great Australian bush tradition, no doubt you are using the cooler winter months to hone your skills and your blades!
