Fastest relay team but not the winners
1 Apr 11
The fourth staging of The Bowlo Cup was enjoyed by a large crowd, in good weather and competitive swimming, featuring the young, the old and many in-betweens.
The format of the relays (which requires teams to set an intitial time in their first swim and then not better that time by three seconds or more) was called into play several times through the elimination heats, but really came to the fore in the final when three teams “outdid themselves” and came undone, but nonetheless the competition unearthed worthy champions and a plethora of talent with loads of community enthusiasm.
The touching note of a minute’s silence for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake was a sombre reminder of the real worth of community effort and appreciation of others.
Our report from the organiser Alsison Baker follows.
Congratulations once again to Alison for bringing the idea back from New Zealand and making the relays a K.V. tradition.
It is now some weeks after this year’s most successful Bowlo cup.
I’m pleased that we again had great weather on the night, as it’s been much cooler and wetter since.
Neptune must have been smiling on us!!!
What a night of fun we had!
With chocolate fish for all (thanks Melitta) and many other prizes on the night, the Bowlo cup stands as a stunning example of “community action”.
26 teams (two more than ever before) battled for two and a half hours for the honour of holding the Bowlo cup and at the end of the night the cup has returned to the Bowling club with the Visions team.
Nicki, swimming butterfly all night, was a shining star.
Congratulations to Nicole Poelzl, Ben Winch, Hayley Hindman and Beth Britton, the Visions team and 2011 winners of the Bowlo cup.
Their prize was the cup, a set of towels and $80 all donated by the Bowling Club.
Runners up this year was a tied affair with Three Roses and a Thorn (the McGregor family) and the Rubber Duckies ( Noah Thomas, Reuben Bacon, Zinzan Still and Liam O‘Connor).
Prize money also donated by the Bowling club.
As new development for this year Rob and Jan at the Heavens Mountain Escape were keen to encourage both the young and the not so young in Kangaroo Valley to swim for fitness and fun and donated $120 in cash for the oldest and youngest teams.
Congratulations to Still got a Bit of Spark (Cathy Gorman, Nell Britton, Jeremy Butterworth and Robert Farnham) and Surfs Up (Sarah, Emily, Abby and Maya) for collecting that dosh..
Mennie Hands( Caelan Barker, Will Lumsden, Luka Russell, Taidgh Larkins) were chosen as the winner of best team name and Waterproof (Jennifer Williams, Tandia Molina, Giovanna Perri and Campbell Harvey) best high school team performance (prize of kayaking voucher donated by Kangaroo Valley Safaris), with the Rubber Duckies as best primary school performance ( prize donated by AquaService).
The fastest team on the night were the ‘KV Solar Powered’ Budgies Smugglers (Ian Boyle, Alex Field, Oliver Radic, Peter Still), as predicted those tight cossies do reduce drag. The $80 prize from Cathy and Mike Gorman will no doubt be reinvested in new ‘gear’ for 2012!!
The Visions restaurant voucher(valued at $50) for pre registration was won by Fluffy Ducks (Julie Mairinger, Suzanne Greer and Gayle and Allan Harvey). Julie Mairinger and Partner took out the couples race.
The prize donated by Gayle and Jeff at The Man from Kangaroo Valley Trail Ride.
Thanks go to our team of helpers Sharon, Fi and Margo on the all important timing table!! Paul, Serge, Pete, Gina, Chris, Bruce and Bob timekeepers.
Our sponsors are local businesses, who when contacted, happily give to make the BC a rewarding night for all.
