Dan Murphy's Report to Council
2 May 11
A report to be presented to council’s Development Committee meeting next Tuesday (3 May) raises important social impact issues that indicate that the Dan Murphy development application should not be supported.
The report outlines the implications that this development could have on the community.
Dan Murphy’s is well known as a one stop shop for a variety of alcoholic beverages at discounted prices.
Council has received a number of letters from residents, community groups, schools and other organisations all strongly opposing the approval of this large supermarket style bottle shop.
With 3 alcohol outlets already in the area, the addition of another is believed to exacerbate existing alcohol related issues.
Much of the opposition from the public is based around the well documented fact that alcohol consumption is linked to increases in public and domestic assaults.
The report being presented to council states that the option of refusal of the DA is based on the grounds that the proposed development will have an unsatisfactory social impact, with insufficient information being provided to demonstrate that the adverse impacts can be mitigated.
