Council to launch Shoalhaven Bushcare Youth Group

Shoalhaven City Council is combining with the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority to form the Shoalhaven Bushcare Youth Group to attract young members to the volunteer organisation.
The 2011 NSW Coastal Volunteers Conference highlighted a state wide need for young volunteers to become involved in Bushcare/Dunecare and Landcare organisations.
Shoalhaven City Council Director of Operations and Services, Bill Paterson said with the area’s 69 Bushcare groups currently having an average age of 54 it was important to increase involvement within the younger generations.
“Bushcare groups provide immeasurable environmental, social and economic benefits to the area through the ongoing maintenance of our natural resources,” said Mr Paterson.
“However, if the area’s Bushcare Groups are to remain sustainable into the future then it is essential that we begin introducing younger members into the organisation.
“Bushcare Groups are an important element in the long term management of the city’s natural area reserves.”
“The Shoalhaven is home to many young residents who have already demonstrated a passion and concern for the local environment.”
Any residents aged between 16-30 and that are interested in joining the Shoalhaven Bushcare Youth Group can call

Mr Paterson said the group will operate primarily within the Shoalhaven’s coastal zone and would provide additional assistance to the on ground natural area public reserves currently under Council ownership or management.
