Bridge restoration update

1 May 11

Although our community will face some inconvenience as the major work begins on Hampden Bridge, the reward of having our wonderful old bridge fully restored surely makes the short term problems worth while. Work is being done sympathetically, to preserve the original character and construction of the bridge, ensuring its historic importance and beauty are preserved.

The RTA’s ad in this edition also outlines a schedule of works that is designed to minimise disruption to our community and other bridge users.  As the Chair of the Road Action Group, I have to congratulate the RTA staff involved in the project, for their preparedness to listen to, and address our community’s concerns. Still smarting from the treatment we received over the RTA’s removal of 100 trees on Moss Vale Road, we entered discussions with the RTA with trepidation. Yet from the first public meeting, this has been a totally different experience, with the RTA and our community involved in a genuine process of consultation. We’ve played our part, speaking up at meetings, raising our issues and responding to surveys. For their part, the RTA has provided many opportunities for input and has taken our concerns seriously, modifying their plans to address them. The results show that community consultative processes can work where there is good will and commitment on both sides.                                    Wendy Caird
