Bridge restoration project enters last phase

1 Aug 11

As was the case during the first stage of work, bridge closures will be limited to between 6 pm and midnight each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

After the bridge re-opens on these evenings some work may continue from midnight until approx. 1.30 am securing deck timbers; while the bridge will be open there will be 'stop/slow' traffic control in place for this hour and a half.

The temporary community shuttle bus service and carparking arrangements in place from 6pm to midnight during stage one closures will also resume this week. Pedestrian access across the river will continue to be via the temporary construction scaffolding. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear the safety glasses available on site from RTA staff. The glasses offer protection from sawdust and dirt when walking below the worksite. Stage two closures will continue until Thursday 8 September 2011.

In the event of wet weather or unexpected delays impacting on progress this period may be extended by up to two weeks.

The RTA will provide advance notice if this becomes necessary.

The area around the bridge will once again be an active worksite from today.

In the interests of the safety of other motorists, pedestrians and the workforce on site, please continue to drive carefully on the bridge and observe the temporary speed limit in place.

During stage two work will include completion of the bridge redecking, rebuilding the bridge abutment on the village side of the bridge, replacing the corresponding two bridge bearings, removing and replacing the central mid-span pin and partially reconstructing the central trusses. The road surface on both approaches will also be upgraded and much of the truss timber repainted.

The RTA thanks you for your continuing interest and co-operation.
