Beachley Masters Valley Court - Kangaroo Valley Tennis Club Social and Information day
11 Nov 09
KANGAROO Valley Tennis Club members were given a treat recently at their annual social and information day. The event attracted a big turnout of more than sixty people with the aim of encouraging more people to take up the sport.
One of the highlights was the appearance of seven time world surfing champion Layne Beachley and her rock star fiance Kirk Pengally of INXS fame.
There were many juniors in attendance and they enjoyed getting out and giving a few balls a bash around the court.
The large crowd was treated to two exhibition matches, the first being between Laura Kent and Mitchell Pritchard and the second a round of doubles with Laura and Mitchell taking on Beachley and local tennis identity Mark Pritchard.
Layne and Mark had their hands full contending with Laura and Mitchell and in the end the juniors were victorious in a thrilling match that drew oohs and ahhs from the grandstand-but the seniors shouldn't feel too put out by their loss as Laura is currently the under 14 number 1 in NSW and Mitchell has just toured Europe as a member of Australia's under 13 squad of seven.
The tennis committee ladies put on a magnificent spread to feed the hungry crowds and tennis was played well into the afternoon, all in all the day was considered a raging success.
Kangaroo Valley Tennis Club offers a relaxed, warm and friendly club in a picturesque setting just metres from the beautiful Kangaroo River. They would love to hear from anyone who might like to join the club and take part in the fabulous sport of tennis. Officials are particularly interested in getting more juniors involved.
