Description
Dawn was born in Hobart, Tasmania, then moved to Melbourne during the war with her parents at the age of four.
At school ; recognizing her talent for art she was encouraged to become an Art teacher. Being awarded a scholarship, she started her formal education at Swinbourne Technical College.
After another move, this time, to Sydney, her Art course was continued at East Sydney Tech. after which she went on to a successful career in the Advertising World.
Marriage, the births of two dearly loved children and a career kept Dawn busy for 40 years in Bayview, Sydney. The inspiration of a bush setting and ocean view, and a new neighbour, Nancy Keith who, in the late 80's introduced Dawn to the magic of clay.
This started another phase in the artistic journey.
Yet another move, this time to Oberon, produced several exhibitions.
Commercial Art was replaced with teaching Hand building in Clay.
The introduction of the acclaimed series "Wildlife-in-hand" which showcase her fine drawing skills and attention to detail.
These delightful Australian "Babies" are still selling well as a collection of 16 prints.
Dawn's work is not only seen in Australia but goes global with pottery pieces and paintings on display in the U.K. Europe, Canada and South Africa.
Now, living with three companion dogs, and working happily in a wonderful setting in Kangaroo Valley, Dawn is surrounded with another passion, her garden, which serves as an ever-changing backdrop to her Dragons, pixies and bird baths. Her home and garden are literally her much loved "Studio"
The many commissioned "Pet Portraits" started when showing Schnauzers was part of Dawn's life, and the portraits, which were always in watercolour, have evolved to Oil! A medium which she avoided for almost fifty years. As a young student, dislike of the messy clean-up and smell of turps which accompanied Oil Painting. But, thanks to a workshop with Derek Watt (who has become an inspiration with his wonderful work) Dawn has found that Oils are currently her favourite medium.
All over Australia and globally, Dawn's work has found its way to the U.K., Europe, Canada, and South Africa.
