NOMINATE DESERVING YOUNG LOCALS FOR AN AWARD
Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock today encouraged residents to nominate young South Coast locals who are working towards alleviating poverty in our region for a UnitingCare Anti-Poverty Award.
The Connections UnitingCare Anti-Poverty Awards recognise young Australians between the ages of 16 and 30 who are making a contribution to the eradication of poverty, locally, nationally or internationally.
"These awards aim to recognise, support, encourage and link young people who are making a contribution to the eradication of poverty," Mrs Hancock said.
"They increase public awareness of the causes and consequences of poverty within our local community, throughout Australia and the world and stimulate discussion, activity and specific actions to deal with poverty related issues," she said.
The Connections UnitingCare Anti-Poverty Awards are presented within Anti-Poverty Week (in October).
As Anti-Poverty Week states 'Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians.' Connections UnitingCare and so many other community welfare agencies support vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community," Mrs Hancock said.
"Every day Connections UnitingCare provide services like intense family support for families (often with children) who are in crisis due to difficulties including drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness, experience of family violence and poverty.
"These awards are a great way for young Australians between the ages of 16 and 30 to receive the recognition for work they are doing in our community.
"One Award recipient will receive a grant up to the value of $4000 to continue their work. Encouragement Awards up to $1000 are also offered.
"For more information about the awards I encourage residents to contact my office at 38 Berry Street, Nowra or visit www.connections.org.au/anti-poverty," Mrs Hancock said.
Nominations are currently open and close August 31, 2010.
