Ninth Annual Buster Keaton Silent film festival

01 Oct 2011

After the Fourth Annual Kangaroo Valley Buster Keaton Silent Movie Show, back in 2006, a satisfied audience member wrote:

"Thankyou for a thoroughly enjoyable evening ... Every so often I realised I was listening to a live pianist playing live music and the wow factor seeped through my body and made me feel so lucky to be exposed to this level of talent and generosity."

This year's show, on Sat October 1, is the ninth on the trot. Again, pianist Robert Constable will trot over from Auckland to accompany classic Keaton, this time the 1924 comedy "Sherlock Jr."

In addition, we'll see scenes from Raymond Longford's 1919 cinematic version of C. J. Dennis's epic and much-loved poem "The Sentimental Bloke".

There's a song, called "The Curse of an Aching Heart", in this film. As it's a silent film we can't, of course, hear it. But we're fixing that: stepping up to the microphone will be Patsy Radic and the Thirsty Night Singers.

Excerpts from the poem will be read by outstanding Berry actor Earle Cross.

Keaton was a master of pure, physical comedy, with Sherlock Jr. being one of the best examples of this. Keaton's character is a film projectionist studying to become a detective. While projecting the film "Hearts and Pearls", he falls asleep, and his dream-self enters the world of the film, leading to some very funny situations. This idea has subsequently been borrowed by many other films, including "Inception".

This show, an annual highlight of the cultural life of Kangaroo Valley, will again raise funds for education projects in East Timor. It's on at 7.30pm on Sat October 1 in Kangaroo Valley Hall. Tickets - $25, $5 (children under 16) - available from the Kangaroo Valley Grocery or by calling 4465 1299.
