Free household sustainability workshops

23 Mar 2011 - 18 Jun 2011

In a move to increase education on managing waste and living sustainably Council’s Waste Services will conduct free 1 ½ hour workshops in the three different areas of sustainability in the home.

Waste Services Manager David Hojem said the workshops are available for all citizens and Council is aiming to help householders change the way they deal with organic waste in particular.

“The Home Composting workshop deals with green and organic waste and provides participants with the essential tools and techniques on how to compost successfully,” Mr Hojem said. “Also each participant in the Home Composting workshops will receive a free compost bin and free kitchen tidy. If each household was able to reduce the amount of green and organic waste going to landfill our landfill at West Nowra would have a much longer life,” Mr Hojem said.

Worm farming is another interesting, fun and reliable way of reducing household organic waste and helping to improve gardens and vegetable patches.

The Worm Farm workshop will look at how to set up a worm farm; what you can feed worms and what do you do with worm “wee”? Find out just why worm farms are so popular.

“If you are interested in replacing chemical-based household cleaners with natural alternatives, now is your chance to learn. The Natural Cleaning workshop will help you establish environmentally friendly cleaning habits at your house. Conventional, chemical-based household cleaners can be harmful to our health, detrimental to the environment and create toxic waste,” Mr Hojem said.

During the Natural Cleaning workshop participants will learn about potential impacts of conventional cleaners, natural cleaning ingredients and recipes, and how to make natural cleaners. They will also make a natural cleaner to take home.

Bookings to all three workshops are essential. Interested participants should book on line through Council’s internet site at www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au. The registration is under the link, Home Sustainability, Free Workshops.
