Bundanon artist in residence program applications open
01 Jul 2011 - 29 Jul 2011
Applications are currently being accepted for Bundanon Trust’s 2012 Artist in Residence Program.
The program offers an inspirational setting for creative thinkers, professional artists from all disciplines for the development of new work, research and collaboration.
Artists are hosted in purpose-built studios located on the Bundanon Trust property, surrounded by pristine bush, nestled on the Shoalhaven River, NSW for up to six weeks.
In 2010 the extraordinary Chooky Dancers from Elcho Island, with multi-award winning director Nigel Jamieson, came into residence to develop ‘Ngurrumillmarrmeriyu'. (Wrong Skin) - inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
It was ‘a total dream’ being at Bundanon, says Nigel Jamieson, ‘I cannot imagine a finer or better designed place to create new work.’
After Bundanon the troupe premiered the work at the Adelaide Festival before touring with it to the Malthouse in Melbourne, Darwin Festival and the Sydney Opera House.
Bundanon Trust Chief Executive Officer Deborah Ely explains, ‘the outcomes of the residency program are evident at galleries and theatres, on the shelves and on the airwaves, all across Australia and out there in the world. Artists in Australia are privileged to have the benefit of Arthur Boyd’s extraordinary act of philanthropy.’
In 2011 more than 350 individual artists will have been in residence at Bundanon including: musicians Ensemble Offspring,
Stu Hunter, William Barton, Katie Noonan and Felix Reibl; performers Tony Yap Company, My Darling Patricia, Restless Dance and Critical Path; visual artists Jackie Redgate, Andrew Arnaoutopoulos, Lisa Andrews, Elvis Richardson and Craig Walsh and writers Kirsty Murray, Justin Fleming and the Association of Stories in Macau.
Writer Justin Fleming, who worked on a Moliere text for an up-coming Bell Shakespeare production, sums up his residency at Bundanon as ‘an inspiring experience’.
‘The expanse, the bush, the open spaces, the Shoalhaven all unite to clear the mind of cobwebs and invigorate the creative spirit.
The nature of the place - with its diversity of wildlife - is a gift to an artist in any discipline. To stay there is a rewarding and productive opportunity, and for all those reasons, unforgettable’ said Mr Fleming.
The Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence program is open to professional artists and groups – emerging and established - from Australia and overseas, working in all art forms.
Bundanon advances contemporary art practice through fostering artists, producers, directors, as well as curators and educators engaged in research and development.
Artists in residence are not required to present a public outcome, although there is an opportunity to engage with the local community through artists’ talks, workshops and/or performances.
