A Few Good Men (and Women)
15 Oct 2010 - 16 Oct 2010
"You can't handle the truth!" Colonel Jessep famously bellows at the courtroom in Aaron Sorkin's play ‘A Few Good Men'.
The court members sit stunned with fear; fear of a vicious Colonel, fear of a war hardened Marine and for the first time they sit in fear of... a woman.
Northholm Grammar School's 2010 production of ‘A Few Good Men' has many exciting firsts.
Most importantly, it is the first time in years that this play has had a cast that is made up equally of males and females.
After sold out shows earlier in the year, the cast and crew are bringing their show for to Kangaroo Valley for two charity performances (October 15 and 16) to help raise funds for the Kangaroo Valley/Remexio Partnership.
This is will be the main charity event for a group of Northholm Students who have undertaken fundraising for the Partnership as part of their community service project.
Whilst the original production called for a cast of around 14 men and one woman, Mr Brad Turbott, the school's Drama teacher, cast females in many of the lead roles, normally held by men.
"When I saw the depth of talent on offer at Northholm, I knew that we would really be missing out if we didn't take advantage of the girls' obvious talent" Mr Turbott said.
"It changes the whole dynamic of the play. Instead of it just being an all male power struggle, the female cast members add a whole new layer to the production," said Ben Dawborn, who takes on the role of Navy Lawyer Daniel Kaffee.
"Any school production has to be about the students first. While we strive to have a high quality final product, it's really about the students getting the most they can out of the whole experience.
They loved doing the show at Northholm, and to be able to bring it to the Valley for such a great cause has got them really excited," Mr Turbott added.
‘A Few Good Men' was made famous on screen by Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, with its famous line going down in film history.
The script was originally written for the stage and has been produced around the world for the last 20 years.
The production will be on Friday and Saturday October 15 and 16 at the Kangaroo Valley Hall, with shows playing each night at 630pm.
