October 2011

Our lunch at the Kangaroo Valley Bowling Club was well attended and our speaker was Karen Anstiss who spoke to us about her organisation called “Slice of Life”.

Karen started her working life with Mission Australia.

Here she saw a need for finding employment for people with a disability.

She realised that they needed to be trained and she decided to set up a way to do this herself. She approached Joanna Gash who after careful consideration arranged for government funding for her idea.

Karen and her husband sold their house and set up a restaurant and food business called “Slice of Life”.

She started with two profoundly deaf people and now has trained and employed many more. Everyone is so happy working with Karen they do not want to move on.

To increase her training places she and her husband have purchased a block of land to grow produce for their business.

You can support this worthy enterprise by visiting her shop on Illaroo Road, opposite the school, at North Nowra.

All the ladies at the lunch were very impressed by Karen and her dedication to her cause.

Her success in this venture was inspiring.

It was a thrill to meet her and hear the story of how she has changed disabled people’s lives.

I thank Christine Short for passing on this information to me.
