April 2011 - Kangaroo Valley Bowling Club
Pennants started on Saturday and the lads from the valley were itching for competition from big brother club Nowra.
Some new faces have joined the ranks and their enthusiasm has definitely been a positive factor throughout the club.
Mark Bone and his ‘green-team’ had the surface in immaculate condition and running mostly around fifteen seconds throughout the day. The North-Easterly rose late in the afternoon creating conditions which started turning the form of respective players from both sides.
Adam Rigney’s team consisting of new comer Rob Folkard, Slim Ward and Nathan Jones, dominated the game from the start.
Although Nowra played some great ends it was mostly the Valley who scored the points.
The sixteenth end they were leading 20 to 6. This was the time the tables turned and Nowra dug deep and began a comeback which had the home team worried. Valley managed to hold on to win their only rink of the day 20 –15.
Nathaniel Cuzner’s boys - ( Darryl Goodger, Ken Crocker and Ken Chittick ), also started slowly and clawed their way back to draw with Nowra by the sixteenth end. The game was drawn as they rolled the final end and Nowra prevailed and stole the game on the last bowl winning by one shot 18 - 17.
Phil Chittick’s team - ( with Bob Holdaway, Bob Dunn and Col Good), got off to a shaky start and trailed up until the three-quarter mark before making a true bid for the game. Another cliff-hanger finish, but not to the Valley’s liking, as Nowra scooped their second winning rink of the day 26 – 24. Although Nowra won two of the three rinks the Valley scored the greater number of points (61-59) giving them a four point start to the 2011 season.
In late January the Valley made their presence felt by dominating the ‘Presidents Pairs’ with Phil Chittick and Nathaniel Cuzner defeating Adam Rigney and Nathan Jones in the final 19-15.
The semi - finals of the fours was played during the week – This was a close encounter of the bias kind right up until the very last end. The eventual victors were two points behind on the last end and got three on the last to win by one point - (21-20). The winning team of Ron Burcher, Barry Werfel, Bob Holdaway and Geoff Lidbetter , (Geoff substituted for Nathaniel Cuzner), couldn’t believe the last minute turn around which has forwarded them into the final.
The unfortunate runners-up were Morgan Cohen, Bob Dunn, Ken Chittick and Phil Chittick.
The mixed pairs event had June and Bob Holdaway take out the title in a close encounter final with new comers Deb and Rob Folkard, who have quickly made their mark in the valley.
Coaching is has been popular in the valley and is producing remarkable results among all comers.
Pennants’ continues and so does the winning run of the Valley. The Valley hosted Callala and won 5-1. Bomaderry hosted the next round and once again Kangaroo Valley snatched a win 4.5 to 1.5 points, which has them off to an early lead in the competition.
This was an exceptional effort in the fact that several regular players were unavailable to play with other commitments and the reserve bench came to the rescue saving the day.
