Swine Flu
I'm sure all and sundry have been following the swine flu with more than just passing interest.
Happily, then ,I can confirm that the swine flu vaccine has been produced and is available, with the immunisation program rolling out before you even read this!
Commencement date is Wednesday 30 September.
It is anticipated that there will be adequate supply for the entire Australian population.
It is certainly available from your local GP and is free to anyone over the age of 10 who wishes to be immunised.
Testing is still underway to determine the safety and suitability of the vaccine in children from 6 months to 10 years and results expected to be available before much longer, should allow the go-ahead for the program in this age group.
Some points.
Swine flu is not necessarily expected to follow the seasonal pattern of regular flu. Experts expect it to stick around, and remain the dominant type for some time yet.
One injection will provide immunity.
The vaccine will be available to doctors in multi-dose vials,so possibly expect to be asked to present in groups,as this will be the most cost-effective way to use it,and minimise wastage.
For all you Kangaroo Valley residents, I can advise that initial supplies have been ordered and should arrive soon.
On another note, now that we are well into Spring, allergies are in full swing, as I'm sure many of you can attest. The recent dust storms certainly haven't helped.
Allergic conjunctivitis, hayfever, allergic rhinitis and asthma are all rearing their ugly heads more than ever at this time of year.
New treatments are always coming on board,so see your pharmacist or GP if these conditions trouble you.
In the media this week, a focus on prostate cancer, with one group suggesting that 40 is the new 50 and that screening should start earlier.
Disputed by the Cancer Council if my recall is correct. Probably fair to say that you won't be knocked back by your GP if you are over 40 and present wishing to be screened.
Remember the symptoms of prostate disease generally-diminishing stream, having to go more frequently, not being able to cut off cleanly after you're done and getting up more frequently at night to go,to name a few.
More often than not, symptoms of benign swelling of the prostate, which happens in all of us fellows sooner or later, are similar to, or even the same as, those of prostate cancer, so if you're troubled by the above, get it checked out quickly.
Talk to you next month.
