September 2011
One looks at the calendar and realises that time is passing by very quickly.
It will not be long and the silly season starts for us in Lions World.
In July we had a charming guest speaker to talk to us about living with Parkinson’s.
I suppose until Merillia Parera, our guest speaker, started talking I don’t think any of us realised just what living with Parkinson’s was like.
Merillia came on the high recommendation of Courtney Clark and we are most grateful for this. The club has decided to try and include a few guest speakers at their meetings and the one in August was Cecily to talk about her new book and also what it is like to raise an autistic child. If you think you might like to come along and hear one of the presenters touch base with our friendly Lion Tamer, Carolyn Green.
Also at the last meeting one of our new members, but long time participant in Lions Margaret Griffiths was also awarded Kangaroo Valley Lion of the Year for 2010/11.
Margaret has done a great job building the local Youth of the Year quest to a high standard and managed to organise last years quest from her sick bed.
We have been discussing the issue of the pool cover for the last few months and council has come back to us with a recommendation that we do not proceed.
Reasons given by council include the health and safety aspect of the cover and the experience that they have had at their other pools.
The money raised by the raffle and various other fundraising has been used to purchase a new lane rope in the pool.
This lane rope was considered an appropriate way to put the money raised into the pool, as was the intent of your support.
Council have made a couple of other suggestions that we are investigating
In the next couple of weeks you will see a little activity in the pool area as we are getting it in top form for the coming season. The tree planting program is coming along well and after all of the storms there is plenty of scope to plant a few more trees to ensure we do our bit in the Lions Million Trees program.
Kangaroo Valley has recently decided due to age and timing constraints that they will no longer maintain the BMX track.
Council has agreed to take over the maintenance effective immediately. The club didn’t want to make that decision but felt that this was the best way to have the gateway to our village look its best.
The Kangaroo Valley community has been very generous in their donations to the disasters appeals that we ran earlier in the year and it is great to report that your contributions have been added to the greater pool and contributed to aid in Japan, Indonesia and to the victims in Queensland and Victorian floods.
