October 2011
Well we must know that Christmas is approaching wen we are about to put the Christmas cakes and puddings out into most of the usual outlets.
More about which ones next month after Dan has finished doing the rounds of where they will be available.
The club has committed to planting 200 tress this year as part of the international program being run by this year’s International President. The new District Governor, Geoff Hobart, at his annual visit talked about the importance of the project and how he was happy to see that Kangaroo Valley was making progress having 35 trees already in the ground.
The motto that DG Geoff has adopted for this year is Dare to Serve.
A challenge to the members but also a motto that help encourage our members to reflect why they are a member of a Lions Club.
It was an enjoyable night at the club where Geoff reflected on his history and his life just down the road in Yass.
It was impressive to hear about his pre Lions career where he was awarded the Police Overseas Service Medal, the National Medal with 25 year bar and the United Nations Service Medal.
In many ways his Lions work continues the great work that he has done during his life, thus far.
Franz and Lorraine recently back from Seattle headed off to the Gold Coast for the ANZI Forum that they reported back had been a very interesting time and managed to learn a few things that they didn’t know about Lions.
Lions Australia has also now joined the technology revolution having recently connected and established a facebook site.
Also in the technology space some of the local Lions have been participating in computer classes and have enjoyed the opportunity to learn a little more and become more proficient.
To date they have covered topics of the computer functions, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and some of the trickier tasks in Email.
All have walked away that little bit more empowered to try.
It is never too late to learn and I can gladly report that no one has yet held the mouse to the screen.
This is also school holiday period and the local club have been involved in the driver reviver campaign.
Numbers are down a little but this is more a reflection on the flexible work force where not everyone takes leave around the school holidays.
Jim Green the local organiser insists that if we serve just one person it may be the one life that we save.
So while the holiday season is on he hopes that we all take that extra care as we will have more cars on the local roads who may not know exactly where to stop, turn or be careful of.
Lion Margaret Griffiths has been very busy putting the finishing touches to the local Youth of the Year quest. Refer to the advertisement on the back page of this Voice to get a bit more about the background to the quest.
The date of the local quest is Saturday 10th December in Osborne Park Hall and all members of the community are welcome to come along.
This is really a good night where we can all be encouraged about the future when we see some of the talent of the young people who choose to participate in this event.
Given that it is so close to Christmas we are likely to make this also our annual party.
