February 2011

It is hoped that everyone had a Christmas and New Year that they had hoped for and 2011 is a great year.

For some 2011 has certainly had a bad start with the devastating floods in four states of Australia.

The Australian Lions Foundation has already donated $200,000 to help those affected.

This money is being used for the immediate needs of the victims like toiletries etc.

Of course there are many businesses collecting and a collection tin is in the Newsagent \ Supermarket on behalf of Lions.

There is also a collection at the Post Office.

If anyone wants to make a donation, requiring a receipt please send that directly to Kangaroo Valley Lions, PO Box 6002 Kangaroo Valley NSW 2577.

100% of money raised by Lions is spent on the relief effort and as a voluntary organisation there are no administration costs.

The Pool Cover raffle was drawn on Christmas Eve at the Hotel.

The winner, Christie Aldred (A KV local) has $1000 to go towards her next holiday.

The Second prize of $500 was won by Jara Johnston-Anderson from Petersham.  Lions would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets but the raffle fell short of expectations and more work is needed to raise enough money to get the cover into place for next years season.

The annual Christmas raffle was also held on this night and a very excited Sky Reeve came forward to claim her winnings.

A favourite of many is the Youth of the Year Quest.  Margaret and Rob Griffiths did a stirling job in securing three great contestants; Dominque Tynan, Ruben Fitzsimons and Pamela Barling.  The judges, Lee Sharam (Chair), Reverend Andrew Paterson and Karen Cruickshank worked hard to choose only one to represent Kangaroo Valley at the next level.  They are shown here being recognised for the tough decision that they needed to make.

The parents of all three contestants are sure to be proud and there always needs to be one winner and it is Ruben who will continue with the quest to the next level.

2010 was also the second year of the scholarship program that Lions has initiated to assist the young people in our community.

The winners for 2010 were Chloe Lenz and Jak Keily.  Congratulations to them.

For a number of years Lions have also awarded a book voucher as an excellence award and this was won by Kathryn Beale.

This year is shaping up to a very hectic year and we all look forward to making Kangaroo Valley a better place to live.        Jason Horton
