Which is one of the most popular activities children chose to explore at pre school?

Painting and drawing.

Most young children naturally delight in painting and drawing.

Art materials give children the opportunity to experiment with colour, shape design and texture.

Through their art, children can express how they feel, think and perceive their world.

They can use drawing to express what they may not be able to say with words.

With young children the process of drawing is more important than the product.

Children develop their physical abilities as they manipulate pencils and brushes.

When drawing  children go through four specific stages as they learn to hold and manipulate a crayon, pencil, texta or paint brush and use them to create their own design:

1.Disordered scribbling.

2.Controlled scribbling.

3.Naming a picture that wasn’t planned.

4.Representational drawing.

Asking your child to tell you about their drawing is always a good strategy as your child will come up with something to say, whether the drawing was planned or not.

Art is enjoyable and satisfying for young children.

It enables them to learn many skills, express themselves, appreciate beauty and have fun all at the same time.

Children have a unique way of seeing the world. We are privileged to have a glimpse into it through their art.

“It took me four years to paint like Rafael, but a lifetime to paint like a child” – Pablo Picasso
