February 2014 - Kangaroo Valley Golf Club

Saturday 16 November was a beautiful morning for the second two ball Ambrose comp for the year, but as there was an odd number ready to play a three ball team was allowed to participate.

They, Sam Hutchinson and Laura and Phil Gane, had a very comfortable win with a nett score of 59.2.

Steve Atkins and Rick Donaldson were second with a nett 67, just pipping Suzie Wright and Di Buckley who had a nett 67.25.

Saturday 23 November was a Stableford round, which was won by Peter Dumbrell with a very good 39 points.

John Innes was second with 37 points and Steve Atkins was third on a countback with 33 points.

Saturday 30 November was the Monthly Medal round with Dave Purll comfortably winning the Stroke comp and Medal with an excellent nett 69.

Mark Grant was second with a nett 73, beating Peter Dumbrell on a countback.

Harry Brittain won the Stableford on Saturday 7 December with 37 points, beating Suzanne Greer, second, and Gordon Thompson, third, on a countback.

14th December was an amazing day of high scores with Andrew Housden, Ron Bower and Phil Gane all scoring 39 points and the places being decided on a countback. Andrew was first, Ron second and Phil third.

On 21 December we were able to have both a Men’s and Ladies’ competition for the par round. Sam Hutchinson won the men’s with a remarkable +8. Brad Innes was second with +2, beating Andrew Housden on a countback. Suzie Wright won the Ladies’ square with the card, Suzanne Greer was second with -2, beating Sue Wegener into third spot on a countback.

There were enough starters on 28 December medal round for another Ladies’ and Men’s competition, and it proved to be the ‘Gane’ family affair. Natalie Gane won the Ladies’ and also the December Medal with a very good nett 68. Laura Gane was second with a nett 69 and Allison Molloy third with a nett par 72. Chris Gane won the men’s with a nett 71, beating another family member, Samuel Hutchinson, on a countback, with David Rae finishing third with a nett par 72.

By the time our first 2014 comp was played on 4 January the dry weather was again affecting the condition of the course, with the greens becoming hard and plenty of run on the fairways. Laura and Natalie Gane had another excellent score in the Ladies' Stableford comp, swapping places. Laura had 39 points, and Natalie 38 ,with Di Buckley finishing third with 36 points. David Golovsky won the Men’s with 39 points, Andrew Housden was second with 37 points and John Seyffer third with 36.

Saturday 11 January 2014 was another Stableford competition, which was won by Suzanne Greer with a great 39, Di Buckley was second with 38 points and Peter Dumbrell third with 37.

Until next time.

February 2014 - Kangaroo Valley Tennis Club

The A-division final last December was convincingly won by the team of
Darrell Johns, Andrew Patterson, Oscar Scherl (shared during the comp with
newcomer Adam Acworth) and Chelsea Sherborne who very ably subbed for Nigel
Anderson in the final. This team had been the standout team throughout the
competition. They defeated the team of Yarran Cox, Mike Gorman, Marion Smart
and Andrew Housden

The final scores suggest that the B -division final was also won  convincingly but it was a much closer battle than the scores suggest with the winners prevailing in four close sets. The winning team was Greg Thompson, newcomer Mitchell Ditton, Bianca Murphy and Chad Tinny who substituted for Jo Stirling.

Greg had a strong night having tightened his  usual flamboyant game for the final. Club newcomer, Chad was damaging on the net.  They defeated the team of Mike Cox who chased down every ball as usual, Rosemary Stanton, Lucy Rodden and Nicholas Carlisle.

The Autumn comps start on Wednesday 19th February for B-division and
Thursday 20th for A-division. The courts will be open at 6 PM on Tuesday 4th
and Tuesday 11th of February for practice and for the team selectors to
assess any new players wanting to take part in the comps. Dion Larkins (0403
549 074) and Gavin Chittick (0427 651 808) are selecting A-division teams
and Peter Stanton (4465 1688) and Mike Cox (0428 651 034) are selecting
B-division teams

February 2014 - Kangaroo Valley Bowls Club

Bowls report

Since my last report, the following is worthy of reporting.

During December, in triples games, wins were recorded by Trevor Chapman, Jim Starkey  and Terry Hayes. Barry Dunn and David Armstrong, Alistair Preston and Peter Owens and Slim Ward and Peter Delamont.

In pairs, Dick McQuilkin and Colin Good won with a notable eight end winning streak in the middle of the game.

On another day, in the triples game in soaring temperatures and high humidity, Slim Ward, Barry Dunn and Peter Owens had a strong win highlighted by a seven end winning run near the start of the game

In pairs, Dan Cole and Bob Dunn had a narrow win as did Harry Harrop and Russell Tulloch.

On the last Saturday of the year, rink 13 was clearly unlucky for Russ Tulloch and Brian Carlisle, who were put to the sword by Phil Chittick and Terry Hayes.

The adjoining rink saw a similar story with David Armstrong and Adam Rigney being pummelled by Dan Cole and Paul Bezant.

The story from his skip was that Dan was “on fire, he could do anything today.”

Other triples games, some mixed, saw Irene Dunn, Bob Dunn and Nick Nichols, June Holdaway, Bob Holdaway and Steve Kellett, Slim Ward, Tom Froggatt and Laurie Watson and Bruce Cole Clark, Deb Folkard and Phil Chittick winning games.

Club championships for 2014 began on 11 January, the closest game being played between Dave Armstrong and Barry Dunn.

Dave prevailed 31-26 after 29 ends.

He dominated the first third of the game but Barry then began a long fight-back which saw him come back to 23-26 before Dave scored five points over the final three ends to close out the game.

The first half of January was very active on the social bowls front, and by far the closest game was a drawn pairs game.

Tom Froggatt and Jerry Johansen took on Bob Holdaway and Peter Webb, and after 21 ends left for drinks with a 19-19 draw.

In other games Tom Froggatt and Adam Rigney combined to win over Phil Chittick and Brian Rutledge, as did Rob Folkard and Mike Nichols over Deb Folkard and Shirley Nichols.

Visitors are always welcome at Berry.
